Day 5: Joy and Mission

Devotional
When the Jerusalem Council's letter reached Antioch, the response was immediate and powerful: great joy! This wasn't merely relief that a theological dispute had been settled. It was the profound happiness that comes when the gospel is clarified and grace is reaffirmed. This joy wasn't the end of the story—it was the beginning of renewed mission. Shortly after this resolution, Paul embarked on his second missionary journey, carrying the clarified gospel message to even more communities. Gospel clarity didn't lead to complacency but to greater zeal for sharing the good news. This reveals something essential about the church's mission: it flourishes best when rooted in the joy of grace. When believers are weighed down by religious performance or uncertain if they've done enough to please God, evangelism becomes a burden rather than a delight. But when we're confident in Christ's finished work, we naturally want others to experience this same freedom. The Jerusalem Council reminds us that fighting for gospel purity isn't merely about correct theology—it's about protecting the very source of our joy and the fuel for our mission. A church clear about grace will be a church passionate about sharing it. When we know we're saved by what Christ has done rather than what we do, we can't help but tell others this liberating truth.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. - Psalm 51:12-13

Reflection Question
How might a deeper understanding of God's grace in your life renew both your joy and your passion for sharing the gospel with others?

“When the Gospel is clarified, it brings great joy.
So when we fight to preserve the Gospel,
we do so not just for the sake of God's glory,
but also for the sake of our own joy.”
~Pastor Mike Mura

Prayer Father, thank You for the indescribable gift of salvation by grace through faith in Christ. Let the joy of this truth overflow in my life, making me eager to share it with others. Guard me from complicating Your simple message or losing the wonder of what You've done. May the clarity of the gospel fuel both my joy and my mission today. Amen.
