Day 3: Imperfect Leaders, Perfect God

Devotional
One of the most comforting aspects of the Bible is its honesty about human failure—even among spiritual giants. Paul and Barnabas weren't minor figures; they were apostolic leaders, handpicked by the Holy Spirit for missionary work. Yet here they are, locked in such intense disagreement that they had to separate. This reality check serves us well in an age where we often place church leaders on pedestals. Every pastor, elder, and ministry leader is a work in progress—a sinner saved by grace who still struggles with pride, impatience, and poor judgment at times. When we place unrealistic expectations on our leaders, we set ourselves up for disillusionment. The beauty of this story is that God's work continued unhindered despite human limitations. The church didn't collapse because two leaders disagreed. In fact, the mission expanded. This reminds us that our hope isn't ultimately in human leaders but in the Head of the Church, Jesus Christ. When leaders disappoint us—as they inevitably will—we can take comfort knowing that God's purposes don't depend on human perfection. His strength is made perfect in our weakness, and His mission advances not because of our abilities but because of His faithfulness.

Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark. But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. - Acts 15:37-38

Reflection Question
How have you responded when Christian leaders have disappointed you in the past? What would it look like to maintain appropriate expectations of leaders while still holding them accountable?

"Every saint walks with a limp.
This story reminds us not to become disillusioned when leaders fail to see eye to eye.
The church is full of redeemed sinners, even the leaders."
~Pastor Mike Mura

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for working through imperfect people like me. Help me extend grace to leaders when they fall short , just as You extend grace to me. Remind me that my ultimate hope rests in You alone, not in human leaders. Amen.
