Out of the Depths: Day Four
Day 4: The Three Tenses of Salvation
Devotional
Salvation isn't a one-time event but a magnificent journey that spans past, present, and future. When we place our faith in Christ, we experience the first phase – we are saved from the penalty of sin. The guilt that once separated us from God is removed, and we stand justified before Him. But God doesn't stop there. Day by day, He works in us to save us from sin's power. This ongoing process of sanctification gradually transforms us to be more like Jesus. We stumble and struggle, yet His grace continues to work in us. And the best is yet to come. One day, when Christ returns, we will be saved completely and finally from sin's very presence. Our salvation will be consummated when Jesus makes all things new. This three-fold understanding of salvation gives us perspective in our spiritual journey. We don't have to be discouraged by our imperfections or ongoing struggles. We're works in progress, being shaped by the Master's hand. And we can look forward with eager anticipation to that day when our salvation will be complete.
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,
training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions,
and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
- Titus 2:11-13
Reflection Question
Which aspect of salvation (past, present, or future) do you need to focus on most in your current spiritual season?
"If you're in Christ, you have been saved, past tense, from guilt and from the penalty of your sin.
You are being saved from the power of sin as God sanctifies you day by day.
And one day you will be saved completely, and finally, when Christ returns and makes all things new."
