Day 2: The Root of the Problem

Devotional
Yesterday we acknowledged that something is wrong with our world. Today, let's dig deeper to understand what that something actually is. It's tempting to point fingers at politicians, systems, or other people as the source of our problems. But the real issue runs much deeper than any external force. The root problem isn't found in our circumstances—it's found in our hearts. From the very beginning, humanity chose to reject God's loving authority and attempt to rule our own lives. This wasn't just a mistake or poor judgment; it was cosmic treason against the rightful King of the universe. Think about it this way: when we decide we know better than God, when we choose our way over His way, we're essentially saying, "I should be on the throne of my life, not You." This rebellion doesn't just affect our relationship with God—it fractures everything. Our relationships become strained, our work becomes frustrating, and our peace is shattered. But here's the encouraging truth: understanding the real problem is the first step toward finding the real solution. When we stop blaming external forces and recognize that the issue is spiritual, we can begin to seek the spiritual answer that God has provided. The same God who diagnosed our condition is the God who offers the cure.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
- Genesis 3:1

Reflection Question
In what areas of your life do you find yourself wanting to be in control rather than trusting God's wisdom and authority?

“Sin is not just rule-breaking, it's rule-taking.
It's not merely doing wrong. It's placing myself on the throne that God alone deserves to sit on.
Sin is treason against the High King of the universe.”
- Pastor Mike Mura

Prayer
Father, I confess that I often want to be the ruler of my own life. Help me to see how my rebellion against You affects every area of my existence. Give me the humility to surrender control to You. Amen.
