We Are Family: Day One
Day 1: The Beauty of Unity
Devotional
Unity among believers is something extraordinary. It's not just another nice idea or pleasant concept - it's a divine gift that should stop us in our tracks. When David wrote Psalm 133, he began with the word 'Behold' - essentially saying, 'Pay attention! Don't miss this!' He recognized that true unity among God's people is something worth celebrating and cherishing. What makes this unity so special? It's both good and pleasant. Think about that combination for a moment. Many good things in life aren't particularly pleasant (like exercise or paying taxes), and many pleasant things aren't necessarily good for us (like binge-watching TV or eating an entire cake). But the unity of God's family offers both - it's beneficial for our spiritual growth and genuinely enjoyable at the same time. This unity isn't something we manufacture through shared interests or similar backgrounds. It's supernatural - flowing from our connection to Christ. When we gather as believers, we're experiencing something the world simply cannot replicate: a bond that transcends human divisions and even death itself. This is why the church, despite its imperfections, remains a unique place of belonging and connection unlike any other community on earth.
Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! - Psalm 133:1
Reflection Question
In what ways have you experienced both the goodness (spiritual benefit) and pleasantness (joy) of Christian unity in your life? How is this different from other forms of community you've experienced?
"The unity of God's family is joyful.
The unity of God's family is good, and the unity of God's family is blessed."
— Pastor Mike Mura
Prayer
Father, thank you for the gift of unity in your family. Help me to truly appreciate how special it is when believers dwell together in harmony. Open my eyes to see the beauty of Christian community and to never take it for granted. In Jesus' name, amen.
