We Are Family: Day Three
Day 3: The Refreshment of Unity
Devotional
David's second image for unity in Psalm 133 is the dew of Mount Hermon falling on Mount Zion. This might seem strange to us, but to his original audience, it painted a powerful picture. Mount Hermon, with its snow-capped peak, was known for heavy dew formation. Mount Zion, by contrast, was in a much drier region. The picture is of unexpected refreshment coming to a place that desperately needs it. Like finding an oasis in a desert, unity among God's people brings life-giving moisture to dry and weary souls. When we experience true Christian community, it's like spiritual hydration in a world that leaves us parched. This refreshment doesn't just happen automatically when we occupy the same building on Sunday mornings. It requires us to slow down, to linger, to make space for meaningful connection. It happens when we move beyond surface-level conversations to share our real struggles and joys. It flows when we look beyond our own needs to notice others who might be going through a spiritual drought. In a culture of busyness and isolation, the refreshing dew of Christian unity is more needed than ever. When we make time to pray together, listen to each other's stories, and bear one another's burdens, we participate in God's life-giving design for his family.
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together,
as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
- Hebrews 10:24-25
Reflection Question
Who in your church family might be experiencing a spiritual "dry season" right now? How could you be like the dew of Hermon to them this week, bringing refreshment through your words, presence, or practical help?
"When we gather, we don't just come to get something for ourselves, like a consumer.
We should come desiring to stir up one another." — Pastor Mike Mura
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for the refreshment you provide through your people. Help me to slow down enough to both receive and give this blessing. Show me who needs encouragement today, and give me the courage to move beyond comfortable relationships to be a source of refreshment to others. In Jesus' name, amen.
