There is something deeply personal about the way David opens Psalm 23. He does not say "the Lord is a shepherd" or even "our shepherd." He says, "The Lord is my shepherd." That one word, my, changes everything. David knew what it meant to be a shepherd. He spent years in the fields, caring for sheep that could not care for themselves. And somewhere in those long, quiet days, he came to see that God had been doing the very same thing for Him. So when it came time to describe who God was, David did not reach for royal language. He reached for the most personal image he knew. This is the God we are invited to know. Not a distant manager watching from a hilltop, but a shepherd who is close, attentive, and deeply personal. He knows your name. He knows where you are. And He is not waiting for you to get it all together before He shows up. If you have ever felt like your relationship with God is more formal than personal, more about rules than relationship, Psalm 23 is an invitation to something better. David trusted his shepherd with his whole life, and that trust was built on knowing who God truly is. This week, we are going to walk through what that looks like, one truth at a time. And by the end, we hope you will see what David saw: a God who is worth trusting with everything.
Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
