Bold Witness in a Blind World: Day Two
Day 2: The Heart's True Devotion
Devotional
What gets you most excited?
What makes your heart race with anticipation?
What do you think about when your mind wanders?
These aren't trivial questions - they reveal what truly captures your heart.
In ancient Athens, there were more idols than people. But before we shake our heads at their obvious idolatry, we need to look in the mirror. Our idols might not be made of stone or gold, but they're just as real and just as captivating. Maybe it's the promotion you've been working toward for years. Perhaps it's the perfect relationship you're hoping will finally make you feel complete. It could be the image you're trying to maintain, the comfort you're trying to secure, or even the ministry success you're pursuing. None of these things are inherently wrong, but when they become the center of our universe, they become our idols. Here's the sobering truth: we all worship something. The question isn't whether we worship, but what we worship. Our hearts were designed to find their ultimate satisfaction in God, but when we try to fill that God-shaped space with anything else, we end up disappointed and empty. The beautiful thing about recognizing our idols is that it's the first step toward freedom. When we see how we've been giving our hearts to things that can't ultimately satisfy us, we can begin to redirect our worship toward the One who can. God doesn't want to take away everything that brings us joy - He wants to be the source of our deepest joy. When He's in His rightful place at the center of our hearts, everything else can find its proper place too.
for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God
- Exodus 34:14
Reflection Question
If someone observed your schedule, your spending, and your thoughts for a week, what would they conclude you worship most?
“Whatever it is that captivates your heart and your devotion,
whether it be your career, your image, your comfort, your success, your relationships,
that's what you worship.” — Pastor Mike Mura
Prayer
Father, help me see the idols in my life that I might not even recognize. Show me where I've been looking for satisfaction in things that can't truly fulfill me. Help me find my deepest joy and security in You alone. Amen.
