One Gospel, One Foundation — Day 3
Day 3: Never Graduate from Grace
Devotional
There's a dangerous temptation in the Christian life to think we've outgrown the gospel. We start believing we need to move on to 'deeper things,' as if the gospel were just spiritual kindergarten. But Paul's experience in Jerusalem reveals a profound truth: there are no deeper things than the gospel itself. This challenges our natural tendency to complicate our faith. We want to add our good works, our spiritual disciplines, or our theological knowledge to the gospel. But every addition actually subtracts from its power. When we add anything to the gospel, we don't gain anything extra—we lose everything that makes it good news. The mature Christian life isn't about graduating from the gospel but pressing deeper into it. Every day, we need fresh reminders that we're accepted not because of our performance but because of Christ's. Every spiritual discipline should drive us back to this foundational truth, not away from it.
For by grace you have been saved through faith.
And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,not a result of works,
so that no one may boast. - Ephesians 2:8-9
Reflection Question
In what ways might you be tempted to 'add' to the gospel through your own efforts, and how can you return to resting in grace alone?
“We cannot afford to move on from the gospel of grace into what some people call deeper things,
as if there were such a thing. We just need to press deeper into the gospel.”
— Pastor Mike Mura
Prayer
Lord, keep me from the pride of thinking I've outgrown Your grace. Help me press deeper into the gospel every day of my life.
