Day 4: A Promise Is Not a Law

Here is a simple but life-changing distinction. A promise only needs to be believed. A law must be obeyed. These two things cannot be mixed. The moment you add conditions to a promise, it stops being a promise and becomes a wage to be earned. Paul makes this exact argument in Galatians 3. The Mosaic Law came 430 years after God's promise to Abraham. A later agreement cannot go back and rewrite an earlier one. The promise has seniority. It stands. But here's the honest truth. Many of us, without even realizing it, have converted the promise deal into a law deal in our own hearts. We feel close to God when we've had a good week spiritually, and distant from Him when we haven't. We swing between pride and despair based on our performance. That is not the gospel. That is exhausting. Your standing with God is not based on how last week went. It is based on what the Promiser already did. You don't strive your way into God's favor. You trust your way into it. And that trust produces something striving never can: genuine, lasting rest.
For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. - Romans 8:6

Be honest with yourself: are you currently living more like someone under a promise or someone under a law, and what evidence in your daily life points to that answer?

Father, reveal the places where I have turned Your promise into a performance. Teach me to trust rather than strive, and let that trust produce the rest only You can give. Amen.
