The Kind of People God Uses: Day Three
Day 3: Kitchen Table Discipleship
Devotional
When we think about making disciples, our minds often drift to grand stages, packed auditoriums, and polished presentations. We imagine that real ministry happens in the spotlight with applause and recognition. But Priscilla and Aquila show us a different way – a more powerful way. These ordinary tentmakers didn't have titles, platforms, or seminary degrees. Yet they shaped one of the most eloquent preachers of the early church. How? They opened their home and their hearts. When they heard Apollos speak and noticed gaps in his understanding, they didn't call him out publicly or start a social media campaign about his errors. Instead, they invited him over for dinner. Around their kitchen table, with love and humility, they helped fill in the missing pieces of his theological understanding. This is Christlike correction in action – speaking truth in love, privately and gently. Their approach multiplied Apollos' effectiveness and strengthened the entire church. Most of us will never preach at conferences or write bestselling books. But we can open our homes and our Bibles. We can share meals and create safe spaces for honest conversations. Real discipleship happens not on stages but at kitchen tables, not with applause but with patience and prayer. Your dining room might be more strategic for God's kingdom than any conference center. Your willingness to invest in one person over a meal could have ripple effects you'll never fully know this side of heaven. Don't underestimate the power of ordinary hospitality combined with faithful love.
So, being affectionately desirous of you,
we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves,
because you had become very dear to us. - 1 Thessalonians 2:8
Reflection Question
Who in your life might benefit from the kind of loving, private discipleship that Priscilla and Aquila offered to Apollos?
“Most of you will never preach at a conference,
you may never write a best-selling book, or lead a movement.
But you can open your home, you can open your Bible. You can share a meal.”
- Pastor Mike Mura
Prayer
Lord, help me see the discipleship opportunities right in front of me. Give me the courage to open my home and heart to others. Show me how to speak truth in love, creating safe spaces where people can grow in their understanding of You. Amen.
