Day 3: Finding True Rest
Devotional
Our culture celebrates busyness. We wear our exhaustion like badges of honor, comparing our packed schedules and late nights as if they prove our worth. Yet beneath this frantic pace lies a deeper truth: many of us are running not just to accomplish tasks, but to prove that we matter. Solomon observed this tendency thousands of years ago. He saw people engaged in "anxious toil," staying up late and rising early, eating the bread of painful effort. He recognized that without God at the center, even good work becomes a burden that cannot satisfy our deepest longings. The paradox is striking: "Many people are working so hard in search of rest, but apart from God, it only leads to deeper exhaustion, stress and anxiety." We scroll through social media seeking distraction from our restlessness. We push ourselves to exhaustion hoping to earn the right to rest. Yet true rest remains elusive. Jesus offers a different invitation. He sees our weariness—not just physical fatigue but soul-deep exhaustion from carrying burdens we were never meant to bear. He invites us to come to Him and find rest. Not temporary relief, but soul-deep restoration. This rest isn't passive. It's active trust in the One who said, "It is finished." Jesus carried the full weight of our striving and sin to the cross so that we could stop trying to earn what He freely gives: acceptance, value, and purpose. Today, hear His gentle invitation. Lay down your anxious toil. Release your need to prove yourself. Come to Jesus and find the rest your heart truly longs for.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. - Matthew 11:28
Reflection Question
What burdens are you carrying that Jesus is inviting you to release to Him today?
“The rest that your heart longs for doesn't come
from career success, affirmation, from relationships, or even religion.
It comes from a person.” - Pastor Mike Mura
Prayer
Jesus, I'm tired of striving. I confess that I've been working to prove my worth rather than resting in what You've already done for me. Thank You for carrying my burdens to the cross. Help me to truly believe that in You, it is finished. Teach me to work from a place of rest rather than working to earn rest. I come to You now, laying down my heavy load and receiving Your perfect peace. Amen.
