Too Good to be Man-Made: Day 2
Day 2: The Ladder vs. The Manger
Devotional
Every human philosophy follows the same exhausting pattern: climb the ladder. Work harder, achieve more, perform better, and maybe you'll reach the good life. These messages make us the hero of our own story, placing the burden squarely on our shoulders. But they also make us judges of others who aren't climbing as well as we think we are. The gospel Paul received breaks this universal pattern completely. Instead of humanity climbing toward God, it reveals God descending to humanity. The Creator didn't wait for us to reach Him; He came down to where we are. The manger, not the ladder, becomes the symbol of hope. This changes everything about how we approach life and faith. We're not called to endless striving but to receive what God has already done. The pressure is off because the work is finished. Christ descended all the way to the cross, died in our place, and offers forgiveness as a free gift. No ladder required - just open hands to receive what God has provided. This isn't just theology; it's liberation from the crushing weight of self-improvement and the constant fear of not measuring up.
For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it,
but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. - Galatians 1:12
Reflection Question
What 'ladders' in your life are you trying to climb to earn God's approval or find your worth, and how would your life change if you truly believed those ladders weren't necessary?
“Where man-made gospels always come with a ladder.
the gospel of grace comes with a manger.” — Pastor Mike Mura
Prayer
Father, help me stop climbing and start receiving. Show me the areas where I'm still trying to earn what You've already freely given.
